Media Training

Our approach is practical, realistic and supportive. We keep theory to a minimum so you can spend as much time in front of the camera as possible.

We record interviews either in our own studios in Westminster or the City – or in a studio we can set up at your premises. We then review each interview offering constructive advice and ideas for development in terms of both style and content.

All of our courses are tailored to your requirements but as a guide we offer:

Basic press skills

A half day course for (ideally) three people with one trainer. Delegates learn via a presentation how journalists work and what they’re looking for, as well as how to prepare for an interview and then keep control. Each delegate then receives a series of mock interviews followed by detailed feedback. Delegates are also given a booklet containing material from the presentation, as well as a briefer “tips” card and also individual written feedback.

Broadcast skills

Available as either a half day or full day.

  • What the media expects when a journalist calls
  • How to handle TV and radio interviews
  • Messaging ... how to be concise and memorable on screen
  • Presentation advice ... how to look good on TV
  • Lots of practice of appearing on camera ... we interview you then review your performance with valuable feedback on what works and what doesn't
  • We can come to you or you can use our studios in Westminster, Soho or the City
  • Delegates receive recordings of all their interviews and a report on their progress along with a media handbook.

Advanced media training

Interviews are more hostile in focus and delegates are required to build more specialised skills such as handling being “doorstepped”, doing “down the line” TV and radio interviews and “one plus two” debates with representatives from hostile organisations.

Social media skills

Most journalists are avid users of social media such as Twitter, which is very often the source of a story or a quote nowadays. The BBC even has its own “User Generated Content Unit” that assesses information and pictures available in cyberspace. Are you making the most of this vital media tool – and do you understand how it works?

Our course is available either as an “add-on” module during a press or broadcast session – or as a full day introductory course. Delegates are given various exercises including social media response during a crisis, using social media proactively and dealing with material written / recorded by others and posted on social media sites. The course also includes a series of case studies for discussion.
